In 1994-1995, the OMNR took the R&D work and initiated three pilot projects to gauge how well the prototype model worked in an applied environment. Three study areas where timber harvesting is planned were selected for the pilot applications. The prototype model was applied to the three study areas and localities identified as having high potential were field surveyed. Additionally, areas identified by the model as having "not high potential" were also examined to ensure that high frequencies of sites were not being found in those areas. Approximately 60% of survey time was spent examining areas of high potential and 40% of survey time was spent examining areas of "not high potential."In the Burrows Lake study area, almost 90% of known sites (n=36) fell in areas also identified as high potential. In the Kashabowie Lake study area, 75% of known sites (n=8) fell in areas of high potential. In the Riviere des Iles study area, surveys did not identify any sites. The report describing the work describes the models as applied to each study area, and the results in each study area including the effect of incorporating areas of high potential into the forest management planning process. Three chapters also detail the surveys conducted and the sites found.
